The Top 10 In-Demand Skincare and Esthetic Treatments

Apr 01, 2021

Take a look at the skincare and esthetic services that are currently trending with beauty experts.

As we age, our skin loses its elasticity and ability to retain moisture. Sun exposure over a lifetime leads to age spots and wrinkles. Many people suffer from chronic skin conditions like eczema or acne from time to time. Despite all the skin scenarios we have to deal with, there are amazing treatments out there that can reverse the signs of aging and help resolve skin conditions. Here are some of the most popular skincare and esthetic treatments available today.

1) Skin Brightening Facials

Facials are one of the foundations of esthetic services that encompass a lot of specialty products and skincare ingredients. One facial that is frequently requested is a brightening facial. Most salons or esthetician offices will have their own version of this facial, but there are common ingredients and desired results you can expect. Overall, the purpose is to lighten the appearance of dark spots, acne marks, or hyperpigmentation. Some common ingredients include vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and many others.

2) Chemical Peels

The purpose of the chemical peel is to improve the appearance of the skin by inducing the outer layer of the skin to peel. This can reduce the visibility of fine lines, age spots, and hyperpigmentation. The new layer of skin is generally brightened with fewer wrinkles. Due to this type of advanced chemical-based exfoliation, irritation can be common. Although the initial peeling stage may be disconcerting, usually, the finished process results in skin with a much healthier appearance.

3) Dermabrasion and Microdermabrasion

Dermabrasion also has the intention of removing dead skins cells but is based more on physical exfoliation techniques instead. Dermabrasion is a skin-resurfacing procedure in which a rotating dermabrasion device removes the first layer of skin.  The difference between dermabrasion and microdermabrasion is that microdermabrasion is typically a lighter version of the exfoliating procedure, whereas dermabrasion is better suited for deep scarring or advanced hyperpigmentation. Dermabrasion requires more downtime for the skin and has the potential for more side effects.

4) Microneedling

Microneedling is performed with the intention of increasing collagen production. After a couple rounds of microneedling sessions, patients typically report smoother skin with an improved texture and complexion. Microneedling is often recommended to fade long-term acne scarring. Fine needles are rolled across the skin to stimulate collagen production. As this is technically creating small openings in the skin, it is highly recommended to consult your esthetician or dermatologist before attempting this procedure.

5) Brow Lamination

Brow lamination is a trending practice that has particularly taken off in 2021. It involves brushing up the eyebrows and laying them down with a setting lotion, keeping them in place for weeks. The result—full brows that still have a fluffy appearance with individual hairs. This differs from some eyebrow gels or pencils that typically fill in the eyebrows.

6) Microblading and Lip Blushing

Semi-permanent makeup has become increasingly popular in recent years as more and more people opt for low-maintenance makeup. Semi-permanent makeup usually involves microblading, using a small, refined tool to deposit pigments under the skin. Most often this is used for eyebrow microblading and lip blushing. For eyebrows, microblading creates fuller, shapely brows that mimic hair strokes. Lip blushing, on the other hand, uses these tools to add semi-permanent pigment to the lips, giving the appearance of a natural rosy tint.

7) LED Acne Therapy

LED acne therapy involves using LED lights in the hopes of killing off the bacteria that frequently causes acne. Emitting red or blue LED lights on the face for an extended period of time is usually performed in this treatment. There is some evidence to support this acne treatment, but there haven’t been large-scale studies yet. Additionally, the quality of devices used in this service can widely differ.

8) Sugar Waxing and Laser Hair Removal

Hair removal services are a huge request for estheticians and salon owners. While some prefer to use waxes or hair-removing sugar scrubs, many people prefer a more permanent solution with laser hair removal. In this highly requested procedure, a laser is used to inhibit hair growth at the follicle level.

9) Anti-Aging Facials

Anti-aging facials are another type of skincare treatment that can involve many active ingredients and tailored products. The purpose of these facials primarily is to improve the appearance of wrinkles, age spots, fine lines, and uneven skin tone. Some common ingredients used in these facials include forms of vitamin A, vitamin E, vitamin C, ceramides, and antioxidants.

10) Dermaplaning

Dermaplaning is another exfoliation technique intended to remove the outer layer of dead skin to bring out the refreshed layer underneath. This is done by using a small blade to skim the surface of the skin. This is generally less invasive than dermabrasion techniques. Dermaplaning can help reduce the look of acne scars, hyperpigmentation, and sun damage spots, along with removing hair.

It is important to remember that many of these skincare services can cause irritation or dermatitis if not evaluated closely. Some treatments are well-suited for certain skin types and not for others. Remember to consult with a medical or skincare professional about any allergies or sensitivities before starting a new facial or service. Proceed with caution when adding any chemical ingredients or physical exfoliation tools to your skincare routine.

Some of these techniques you will find available at your local esthetician’s office, while some may be available at a specialty clinic. However, if you are interested in learning any of these esthetic techniques, receiving an education in esthetics is a necessary place to start. Luckily, schools like PJ’s College of Cosmetology have an esthetics program that prepares you to get an esthetician’s license. Enrollment is ongoing now. Request information online to talk with an enrollment advisor.

Whether you’ve been fired or are simply looking to take your career to the next level, switching jobs in the beauty and wellness industry takes strategy and planning. You can have a job or you can build a career; the choice is yours. If you find yourself job hopping frequently, either by choice or by circumstance, it’s going to be more difficult to establish yourself. A job switch is something to be taken seriously as the consequences of your move, both good and bad, can reverberate for months and even years. Before you make a job switch, think through these 5 things. YOU WILL LOSE BUSINESS We know it feels like everyone will follow you if you do leave, but not everyone does. Some won’t like the drive, the new salon, spa, or shop décor, or even your new team members. Some clients may even be looking for an excuse to try someone new. MULTIPLE MOVES RAISE A RED FLAG TO FUTURE EMPLOYERS Salon, spa, and shop owners look at your track record and if they see you’ve moved multiple times over the past 1-3 years, they are going to be less enthusiastic about hiring an “at risk” team member. YOU MAY BE THE PROBLEM If you have moved several times and are still not happy, then it’s time to do a checkup from the neck up. The only common denominator in your career choices is you. It’s time to stop and think about what it is you really want, write it down, and go find it. WHEN IT ISN’T WORKING, TALK IT OUT Let’s face it: there are going to be times when you just are not “feeling it,” and the love and newness has worn off. When you get to that point, reflect on what you are feeling and ask yourself, “Is it true and is it real?” If it is, then the only way to work through it is to go to the source and talk it out. If you don’t, it will fester and get worse. RECOGNIZE AND CELEBRATE WHAT IS WORKING Look around and appreciate the perks, joys, esthetics, flexibility, team, training, or whatever else is really great about where you work. Sometimes just shifting your thoughts can create a new perspective. Moving on After Being Fired What if your job switch is based not on choice but on circumstance and you have been fired? Being fired is extremely stressful, no matter the reason. You can find yourself struggling with all types of emotions ranging from embarrassment, anger, fear, and even depression. If you’re in this sticky situation, follow these steps to turn this potential negative into a positive. LOOK TO YOUR FUTURE It can be difficult getting past the “being fired” part, but you must move on! You have two choices: you can live in a negative space and dwell on the past or you can decide to look to your future and learn from this experience. TAKE OWNERSHIP This can be as painful as being fired itself. Spend some time taking a personal inventory of the reasons why you were dismissed. Don’t play the “blame game” and point fingers at others. Take full responsibility and turn this negative experience into a positive learning opportunity for your future. Reach out to mentors or enroll in outside education to help you grow in any areas that are keeping you from the success you are destined to achieve. MOVE FORWARD It’s time to freshen up your resume and cover letters. Be certain to point out your successes and your strengths. There is no reason to mention your dismissal at this time. INTERVIEWING During your interview for a potential new position, be prepared to answer those questions you fear the most like, “Why did you leave your last job?” Honesty is the best policy, but there’s no need to get into a long drawn out conversation about it; keep it brief. Share what you have learned and how you have made a personal commitment to learn and grow from this experience. If you have enrolled in outside education and/or have mentorship in this area be sure to share this information during your interview. For other interview tips, check out this guide. Being fired from a job can shake a person to their core. It ranks in the top of life’s most stressful situations, but if you take the initiative by enrolling in classes and reaching out to mentors to move past any barriers, you can turn things around. Job switches can happen at any time for a multitude of reasons. It’s up to you to be proactive and always go towards what you want. When you need to make big changes, make sure to do your research and make sure the changes are in the direction of your dreams.
