5 Daring Makeup Trends To Try in 2021

Admin • Jan 15, 2021

As the new year continues, everyone is flocking to the gym or hair salon to achieve their new year's beauty resolutions. However, there are quick and inexpensive ways to feel beautiful, which can all be attained right at home. Giving your makeup routine a boost is a perfect way to step out revitalized in 2021.

Makeup this year will be all about breaking through the noise with bold shapes and vibrant colors. As masks have become a part of our wardrobe staple, this year revolves around creating statement eyes. In 2021, let your eyes do the talking while using lip stains and mattes that can last underneath fabric. Here are five trends gaining popularity that can easily be recreated, no matter your expertise with makeup.

1) Negative Space Eyeliner

We have all seen some exciting looks this past year for eye makeup. Colorful shades of blue, green, yellow, and purple have dominated, along with blended multi-tone cut creases. With some new-found downtime, many aspiring make-up artists have found themselves experimenting with new lines and neon shades. Whether you find yourself at home, work, or school, this is the time to own these daring eye looks. The tutorial videos are endless on social media, but one look that continues to peak is the “negative space” or “floating” wing eyeliner.

“Negative space” refers to creating the outline of a wing without filling it in to create a shape of negative space around the eye. This trend mostly centers on creating a wing shape of negative space on the upper eyelid and past the corners of the eye. This creates a graphic line that frames the eyes and makes them appear larger and more defined.

The color combinations are endless. While some like to keep it classic with a black graphic line, others opt for white, rich colors, or even neon shades. As well, as this trend keeps growing, so does the range of shapes. Clouds, flowers, and other abstract shapes have all been drawn around the eye to create a negative shape effect. The only limit is how daring you are willing to go.

Celebrities like Bella Hadid and Margot Robbie have been spotted wearing this eye trend. Today’s makeup artists have taken this ‘60s mod look and modernized it with new shapes, graphic lines, and bold colors.

2) Glitter
and R hinestone Applications

As many people are reminiscing on their favorite concerts and festivals, makeup artists are recreating the famous jeweled festival looks for the everyday.

Glitter and gem applications are a throwback to some of the bold eye makeup of the ’80s and ’90s. Glitter and rhinestones are not new makeup accessories, but the deliberate choices and applications in 2021 create a clear look distinct to a new generation of makeup artists. Where other time periods applied glitter compacted on the eyelid or sweeping across the eye, this makeup trend is all about precise placement to create an other-worldly effect.

Glitter that runs from the eyes down the cheek, rhinestone sunburst and teardrop patterns, and glitter eyeliner or eyebrows are all trending methods of these beauty staples. Silver and gold are often the most common choices for applications, but any color can be styled perfectly in 2021. Kylie Jenner was seen rocking this bedazzled look just last month.

3) Vivid L ip S tain

In 2021, bright and colorful lips do not have to be canceled. Whether you are wearing a mask or just want to look your best at home, bright and durable shades are essential to have long-lasting color.

Lip tints, stains, and certain matte lipsticks are all good alternatives this year. One popular trend is to focus the pigmentation on the inside of the lips and fade out, creating a just-bitten stained appearance. Some beauty gurus have taken to using foundation or concealer on the lips before applying this color to further this effect and ensure longer coverage.

4) C olor ful C ontour and Highlights

Over the past year or so, the art of contouring has absolutely exploded. Beauty bloggers and YouTube sensations have all created massive amounts of content relating to achieving the perfect contour and highlight. This year is all about taking these practical makeup skills and getting creative and whimsical with them.

Color contouring and highlighting involve using shades other than the usual skin tone range for contouring. This includes using red, purple, orange, and other warm colors to cut a contour. Others use light-colored highlights to create a nearly holographic effect, with shimmering cool tones accenting the brow and cheekbones. This replaces the highlight with a blue or green tint and even creates an underwater feel. Though these color combinations have become popular, true to the new year, any combo is possible, and this trend requires no holding back.

5) Lifted Cat Eye

Though this style might seem simple, it is a new trend that has come back around in an exciting way. Often, models and influencers are celebrated for having a snatched makeup effect that practically mimics cosmetic procedures. The lifted cat eye is one of their big secrets.

In the ‘90s and early 2000s, it was very common to overline the eyes—even to raccoon proportions. Later this would fade out, as half lined eyes and the still-famous winged liner became popular. However, lining more fully is coming back again for 2021. Particularly, lining and filling the inner corner of the eye, while shaping the end in a wing towards the brow, creates a lifted cat eye. By filling out both corners of the eye, this creates the illusion of a pulling effect, making the eyebrows and eyes look higher on the face.

Whether you’ve been fired or are simply looking to take your career to the next level, switching jobs in the beauty and wellness industry takes strategy and planning. You can have a job or you can build a career; the choice is yours. If you find yourself job hopping frequently, either by choice or by circumstance, it’s going to be more difficult to establish yourself. A job switch is something to be taken seriously as the consequences of your move, both good and bad, can reverberate for months and even years. Before you make a job switch, think through these 5 things. YOU WILL LOSE BUSINESS We know it feels like everyone will follow you if you do leave, but not everyone does. Some won’t like the drive, the new salon, spa, or shop décor, or even your new team members. Some clients may even be looking for an excuse to try someone new. MULTIPLE MOVES RAISE A RED FLAG TO FUTURE EMPLOYERS Salon, spa, and shop owners look at your track record and if they see you’ve moved multiple times over the past 1-3 years, they are going to be less enthusiastic about hiring an “at risk” team member. YOU MAY BE THE PROBLEM If you have moved several times and are still not happy, then it’s time to do a checkup from the neck up. The only common denominator in your career choices is you. It’s time to stop and think about what it is you really want, write it down, and go find it. WHEN IT ISN’T WORKING, TALK IT OUT Let’s face it: there are going to be times when you just are not “feeling it,” and the love and newness has worn off. When you get to that point, reflect on what you are feeling and ask yourself, “Is it true and is it real?” If it is, then the only way to work through it is to go to the source and talk it out. If you don’t, it will fester and get worse. RECOGNIZE AND CELEBRATE WHAT IS WORKING Look around and appreciate the perks, joys, esthetics, flexibility, team, training, or whatever else is really great about where you work. Sometimes just shifting your thoughts can create a new perspective. Moving on After Being Fired What if your job switch is based not on choice but on circumstance and you have been fired? Being fired is extremely stressful, no matter the reason. You can find yourself struggling with all types of emotions ranging from embarrassment, anger, fear, and even depression. If you’re in this sticky situation, follow these steps to turn this potential negative into a positive. LOOK TO YOUR FUTURE It can be difficult getting past the “being fired” part, but you must move on! You have two choices: you can live in a negative space and dwell on the past or you can decide to look to your future and learn from this experience. TAKE OWNERSHIP This can be as painful as being fired itself. Spend some time taking a personal inventory of the reasons why you were dismissed. Don’t play the “blame game” and point fingers at others. Take full responsibility and turn this negative experience into a positive learning opportunity for your future. Reach out to mentors or enroll in outside education to help you grow in any areas that are keeping you from the success you are destined to achieve. MOVE FORWARD It’s time to freshen up your resume and cover letters. Be certain to point out your successes and your strengths. There is no reason to mention your dismissal at this time. INTERVIEWING During your interview for a potential new position, be prepared to answer those questions you fear the most like, “Why did you leave your last job?” Honesty is the best policy, but there’s no need to get into a long drawn out conversation about it; keep it brief. Share what you have learned and how you have made a personal commitment to learn and grow from this experience. If you have enrolled in outside education and/or have mentorship in this area be sure to share this information during your interview. For other interview tips, check out this guide. Being fired from a job can shake a person to their core. It ranks in the top of life’s most stressful situations, but if you take the initiative by enrolling in classes and reaching out to mentors to move past any barriers, you can turn things around. Job switches can happen at any time for a multitude of reasons. It’s up to you to be proactive and always go towards what you want. When you need to make big changes, make sure to do your research and make sure the changes are in the direction of your dreams.
