The Pros and Cons of Eyelash Extensions

May 05, 2021

Here is a list of the pros and cons you should know before getting an eyelash extension service.

In recent years, the practice of getting eyelash extensions has boomed while the technique behind it continues to improve. As we know, people modifying their eyes with cosmetics and makeup is nothing new. In ancient times, people used kohl to outline their eyes and make them stand out. The mascara we know today was created with petroleum jelly and coal in its early history.

Today, eyelash extensions have created a revolution where you no longer have to apply cosmetics to your lashes each day to have a full-lash effect. If you have been on the fence about whether to get eyelash extensions or not, there are some pros and cons to consider.

Pro: You No Longer Need To Use Mascara or False Lashes Every Day

With eyelash extensions, one of the benefits people appreciate the most is that they wake up with perfectly feathered lashes—no mascara required. We have all had issues with mascara that globs onto our lashes, sticks them together, and gives the appearance of spindly insect legs. To make matters worse, just one hot summer day, and it looks like you just went through a horrible break-up as your mascara runs down your face. Thankfully, eyelash extensions help resolve these cosmetic nightmares. They completely eliminate the regular need for mascara or falsies.

Pro: Gives You Semi-Permanent, Long-Lasting Lashes

Eyelash extensions are considered a form of semi-permanent makeup and cosmetic services. This means they are intended to be long-lasting and give an alternative to traditional makeup that requires daily upkeep. Eyelash extensions are ideal for people who want to wake up in the morning and get out the door as quickly as possible while still looking put together and luxurious.

Con: They Need To Be Retouched From Time to Time

Although eyelash extensions last much longer than your typical cosmetics, they are not considered permanent. This is partially by design as most people like to protect and wear their natural lashes from time to time. Due to being semi-permanent, you can have more flexibility with how you wear your lashes.

Eyelash extensions are attached to your natural lashes with adhesives. Since our eyelashes grow and shed like the rest of the hair on our bodies, extensions also eventually fall out as a natural process. It is recommended to get your lashes touched up every four to six weeks to maintain the maximum effect. Some people like to get lash refills more regularly to plump any areas that have thinned out.

Pro: You Can Shower, Swim, and Sleep Without Runny Makeup

Another positive note to eyelash extensions is that they allow you to live your active life without worrying about what your lashes or eye makeup looks like. Extensions are finessed to allow you to swim and sweat. They are designed to be waterproof, lasting through a day at the pool or an intense workout. However, it is good to be aware when you are able to do these activities without ruining your technicians detailed work. Be sure to ask your cosmetologist or esthetician how long they recommend to wait before getting them wet. Some brands suggest you only have to keep them dry for eight hours after application, while others recommend a full 48 hours.

Pro: The Procedure Is Painless and Relatively Simple

Lash technicians and cosmetologists have got the process down efficiently and safely. They have mastered the art of attaching lashes individually to create full, thick, and eye-framing lashes. The glue used has been formulated to be non-irritating and safe to use on your lash line. This process has been refined to prevent any damage to your natural lashes.

Con: The Service May Require a Longer Appointment

Because we have so many lashes (300-400 individual strands), a technician does need an adequate amount of time to apply the extensions. Overall, this isn’t a quick and fast service but will require a full appointment block. This can vary between salons and eyelash extension types but can take up to two hours, depending on the service you are getting.

Pro: Eyelash Extensions Elevate Your Look for Special Occasions

Eyelash extensions are a secret weapon for looking elegant at a moment’s notice. People will note that you look refreshed and confident but may not be able to spot what has you looking so polished. Really, it is your eyelashes completely elevating your entire appearance. Since eyelash extensions take some time and are not often a day-to-day service, they are perfect to get done before a trip, special event, or before a new job.

Whether you’ve been fired or are simply looking to take your career to the next level, switching jobs in the beauty and wellness industry takes strategy and planning. You can have a job or you can build a career; the choice is yours. If you find yourself job hopping frequently, either by choice or by circumstance, it’s going to be more difficult to establish yourself. A job switch is something to be taken seriously as the consequences of your move, both good and bad, can reverberate for months and even years. Before you make a job switch, think through these 5 things. YOU WILL LOSE BUSINESS We know it feels like everyone will follow you if you do leave, but not everyone does. Some won’t like the drive, the new salon, spa, or shop décor, or even your new team members. Some clients may even be looking for an excuse to try someone new. MULTIPLE MOVES RAISE A RED FLAG TO FUTURE EMPLOYERS Salon, spa, and shop owners look at your track record and if they see you’ve moved multiple times over the past 1-3 years, they are going to be less enthusiastic about hiring an “at risk” team member. YOU MAY BE THE PROBLEM If you have moved several times and are still not happy, then it’s time to do a checkup from the neck up. The only common denominator in your career choices is you. It’s time to stop and think about what it is you really want, write it down, and go find it. WHEN IT ISN’T WORKING, TALK IT OUT Let’s face it: there are going to be times when you just are not “feeling it,” and the love and newness has worn off. When you get to that point, reflect on what you are feeling and ask yourself, “Is it true and is it real?” If it is, then the only way to work through it is to go to the source and talk it out. If you don’t, it will fester and get worse. RECOGNIZE AND CELEBRATE WHAT IS WORKING Look around and appreciate the perks, joys, esthetics, flexibility, team, training, or whatever else is really great about where you work. Sometimes just shifting your thoughts can create a new perspective. Moving on After Being Fired What if your job switch is based not on choice but on circumstance and you have been fired? Being fired is extremely stressful, no matter the reason. You can find yourself struggling with all types of emotions ranging from embarrassment, anger, fear, and even depression. If you’re in this sticky situation, follow these steps to turn this potential negative into a positive. LOOK TO YOUR FUTURE It can be difficult getting past the “being fired” part, but you must move on! You have two choices: you can live in a negative space and dwell on the past or you can decide to look to your future and learn from this experience. TAKE OWNERSHIP This can be as painful as being fired itself. Spend some time taking a personal inventory of the reasons why you were dismissed. Don’t play the “blame game” and point fingers at others. Take full responsibility and turn this negative experience into a positive learning opportunity for your future. Reach out to mentors or enroll in outside education to help you grow in any areas that are keeping you from the success you are destined to achieve. MOVE FORWARD It’s time to freshen up your resume and cover letters. Be certain to point out your successes and your strengths. There is no reason to mention your dismissal at this time. INTERVIEWING During your interview for a potential new position, be prepared to answer those questions you fear the most like, “Why did you leave your last job?” Honesty is the best policy, but there’s no need to get into a long drawn out conversation about it; keep it brief. Share what you have learned and how you have made a personal commitment to learn and grow from this experience. If you have enrolled in outside education and/or have mentorship in this area be sure to share this information during your interview. For other interview tips, check out this guide. Being fired from a job can shake a person to their core. It ranks in the top of life’s most stressful situations, but if you take the initiative by enrolling in classes and reaching out to mentors to move past any barriers, you can turn things around. Job switches can happen at any time for a multitude of reasons. It’s up to you to be proactive and always go towards what you want. When you need to make big changes, make sure to do your research and make sure the changes are in the direction of your dreams.
